Development and Communications Assistant (Summer Student Position) 

Temporary – Summer Contract (.8 FTE/4 days per week – 30 hours)

Position Overview 

Are you a youth between the ages of 18 and 30 looking to build real-world experience in communications, marketing, event planning, and nonprofit fundraising? Join our team this summer as the Development and Communications Assistant, where you’ll help promote our mission, support fundraising efforts, and gain hands-on experience in community engagement and digital communications. 

This role is ideal for a student studying communications, public relations, marketing, nonprofit management, or a related field. You’ll work closely with the Executive Director and other team members to support donor engagement, assist in organizing events, help with social media and marketing content, and contribute to grant research and public relations efforts.

Key Responsibilities 

Fundraising and Donor Support 

  • Assist in organizing and promoting fundraising events and campaigns. 
  • Help manage donor communications, including thank-you letters and outreach emails. 
  • Support the updating and organization of donor databases. 
  • Research potential donors and sponsorship opportunities. 

Marketing and Communications 

  • Help create and schedule social media content for fundraising events  
  • Assist with designing flyers, newsletters, and promotional materials. 
  • Update website content under supervision. 

Administrative and Grant Support 

  • Provide basic support in researching potential grant opportunities. 
  • Assist in compiling statistics or information for use in funding proposals. 
  • Data entry and auditing 

What You’ll Learn 

  • How nonprofits engage with communities and donors to promote social causes. 
  • The basics of fundraising and event coordination. 
  • Practical communication skills, including writing for different audiences and platforms. 

Qualifications 

  • As part of Canada Summer jobs – a youth between the ages of 15 and 30 years, have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN), and be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. 
  • Studying communications, public relations, marketing, nonprofit management, or a related field. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Comfortable using social media platforms. 
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and willing to learn. 
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team. 

Skills  

  • Creativity and Innovation.  
  • Experience with design/email marketing tools. 
  • Photography or video editing skills. 
  • Familiarity with website platforms.  

Contract Details 

  • Duration: May 19 – September 4, 2025 (16 weeks) 
  • Hours: 4 days (30 hours)/week  
  • Compensation: $21.30 / hour – Living Wage Ontario
